The test XI of the decade picked by the Cricinfo jury is as follows:
1. Mathew Hayden
2. Virender Sehwag
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Rahul Dravid
6. Jacques Kallis
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Shaun Pollock
9. Shane Warne
10. Muttiah Muralidharan
11. Glenn McGrath
12th man: Andrew Flintoff
This XI clearly shows the dominance of the true champions of the game- Aussies, with 5 players out of 11. Following them are the 3 Indian batsmen which surprisingly includes Sehwag (no doubt about his match winning ability, but surprised to see him rated above Mohammad Yousuf and Brian Lara).Even the inclusion of Flintoff as a 12th man doesn't seem to be justified (contribution in famous Ashes'05 victory has paid off!).Kallis and Pollock are the legends and there is no doubt that the final XI can't be complete without them.
Country wise distribution of 11 gems of the decade:
Aus: 5
Ind: 3
SA: 2
SL: 1
Very glad to see Rahul Dravid in the list.
ReplyDeleteAlso suprised to miss V.V.S.Laxman and Mohd Yousuf from the list.
Hi Padma!
ReplyDeleteI think it was a very tough task to select the team and Cricinfo jury have done it well.
Few players who deserve to be in are:
1. Mohd. Yousuf
2. Brian Lara (in my personal opinion, Lara should have been there in place of Sehwag/Sachin)
3. Anil Kumble
4. Kumar Sangakkara
I am equally happy that Dravid is in. But then who can dare count him out ? Going by John Wright's famous comment, the first five players should have been " Rahul Dravid, Rahul Dravid, Rahul Dravid, Rahul Dravid and Rahul Dravid " !!
ReplyDeleteHi kshitij,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you totally.
Mohd Yousuf and Kumar Sangakkara deserve a spot in the list for they were consistent over the years...!!

ReplyDeleteDravid was named the most influential Indiancricketer by TIME magazine in 2007
I have to agree with the list by and large as it refers to 2001-2010. For the opening position, Sehwag and Hayden are easy choices. M. Yousuf does not have the overall consistency or continuity of the others. Sangakara though is a possibility. Lara, no doubt a great batter, played only in the early part of this decade. He would thus figure prominently in the previous decade's choice.
ReplyDeletevirender sehwag was the only man to have 401 in this contest
